Period Proud Environment at Pleckgate

Year 7-10 pupils have undergone training on the Period Peers Programme to help Pleckgate become a ‘Period Proud Environment.’
Plan International UK teamed up with Nurofen’s See My Pain campaign to deliver training to pupils who can then deliver peer-to-peer support to help break down the stigma around the menstrual cycle and build up girls’ and young people’s knowledge to manage their period confidently.
Head of Religion, Worldviews and PSHCE Mrs Savage said: “We want Pleckgate to be a ‘Period Proud Environment’ and our pupils from Year 7-10 have been on a training programme to teach Year 7,8s and 9s about periods and break the stigma.
“We held an event in our sports hall where the Period Peers talked to over 300 pupils about period products, the menstrual cycle, misconceptions and gave the girls an opportunity to ask questions. All the girls were given a pack full of products and materials to make a period bracelet to track their cycle.”
Year 10 Jannath said: “On the training programme, I learnt it was important to say that periods are just a natural part of life. They are not embarrassing, they are something to be proud of. It’s about children in later life and also about controlling your emotions.”
Year 10 Laiba said: “I learnt a lot about the different products available, such as period knickers. It’s given me a lot more confidence to talk about it.”
Haida added: “The training has been good. We want to smash the stigma surrounding periods. Some girls feel embarrassed about it and we are here to talk about it and make sure they have all the information they need.”
