The Orchestra Through the Ages

In January 2023, pupils from Year 9, 10 and 11 had the opportunity to watch the Hallé Orchestra perform at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. 

Conducted by Joel Sandelson and presented by Tom Redmond with soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music, ‘The Orchestra Through the Ages’ took pupils on a guided tour of music from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. The concert demonstrated the development of the orchestra through the following pieces;

  1. SUSATO ‘Renaissance Dances’ for brass ensemble and drums – 4’
  2. S. BACH vii Badinerie from Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor – 2′
  3. HAYDN Symphony No.6 in D, Le Matin, 1st movement – 6’
  4. A. MOZART Clarinet Concerto in A, iii Finale – 6’
  5. van BEETHOVEN Symphony No.7 in A, ii movement (cut version 5’)
  6. BERLIOZ Symphonie Fantastique, iv March to the Scaffold – 5’
  7. BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 in C minor, iv Finale – (cut version 5’)
  8. BOULANGER D’un Matin de Printemps – 6’
  9. SCHWARTZ Defying Gravity, Wicked – 4’
  10. WILLIAMS Main Titles, Star Wars, A New Hope – 6’
