At Pleckgate, we are proud of our commitment to building a strong reading culture. Our Tutor Reads Aloud programme gives every pupil the opportunity to hear high-quality texts read aloud by their form tutor during morning registration.
Reading aloud as a form promotes listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and cultural awareness. It also supports emotional engagement and encourages a love of reading.
How It Works
Form tutors read aloud to their tutor group from a carefully curated selection of books. Pupils listen actively, follow along with the text, and discuss key ideas where appropriate.
What Will Pupils Read?
Our reading lists are thoughtfully sequenced to build knowledge and broaden horizons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Click the links below to explore the texts studied in each year group:
Why It Matters
Research shows that reading aloud is a powerful way to:
- Improve vocabulary and fluency
- Foster empathy and emotional literacy
- Introduce pupils to challenging themes and genres
- Reduce the reading gap, particularly for pupils with limited access to books at home
We believe that every pupil at Pleckgate deserves to experience the joy of reading — and our Tutor Reads Aloud programme helps ensure that reading is a shared experience for all.
